Minimizing environmental impact is now more important than ever. As designers, one of the most effective things we can do to help is design more sustainable packaging and work towards a cleaner world. This booklet highlights the sustainability problems with Lindt’s current packaging and makes a recommended solution with redesigned packaging.
why
Environment: A 2018 report by EPA determined that product packaging accounts for 28% of all municipal solid waste, at 82 million tons per year.
Business: A Futerra report in 2018 showed that 88% of current customers prefer to shop with brands that make a positive impact on the environment.
how
Sustainability design can come from many sources: minimizing material use, using sustainable materials, using recycled materials, and designing for re-usability.

To solidify the proposed sustainability initiative, I created this green Lindt logo. The logo keeps the basic design of the original and implements a leaf into the L to represent Lindt’s steps towards environmentally friendly packaging.
For this booklet, I created a custom icon to represent the Lindt chocolate truffle. During the problem statement, the wrapped icon is on each spread’s bottom right corner. After the solution is presented, the icon switches to a wrapper-less icon to represent the shift towards more minimal packaging.
As a way for the audience to visualize how efficient the redesigned packaging is, I used a simplified version of the previous icons to show the change in discarded packaging.
